Guest Lecture for NAU’s CC688 on Teaching & Technology

Tonight I’ll be guest lecturing about teaching with technology for a Fall 2008 section of CC688: College Teaching. I’m trying to input a bunch of material in one spot. And now I’m playing catchup and editing this post… We talked about: What is Technology? Issues related to Teaching with Technology Some “new” technologies people are using in their teaching To demo a technology, I had them do a PollEverywhere poll asking: When you think “technology” what are two or three words that come to mind? The answers I …

Support Videos

I’ve decided I’ve got to embrace my “good enough” vs. “polished” distinction for multi-modal teaching in yet another way. I’m increasingly making videos for people when they email me with the quick request “I don’t understand how to....” These are videos for both my students and my colleagues. I’m also developing an increasingly longer list of “I need to make a video showing how to do .... with ....” So I guess I’m starting up and repurposing an older blog, ”Keeping up with the Jetsons.” …

Tagged Again

A while back CogDog tagged me for something…and Soul4Real has got me again. She changed the rules, I figured because I only have three books with me while at sxsw interactive I’ll post all three. The general rules: Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages). Open the book to page 123. Find the fifth sentence. Post the next three sentences (sentences 6-9). Tag five people. “Ky said, ‘is that someone I hired from a bonded protection company tried to kill me. He …

Wikipedia is NOT the devil!

Today my co-author and I were reading reviews of the chapter drafts of the textbook we are writing. And more than one reviewer ranted about how/why Wikipedia is the devil. Ugh...first, I’m so tired of that rant. However, I’m now going to use this blog as the draft for how we might (continue) to address Wikipedia in the researcher textbook we are writing. First, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and like any other good reference tool, should be used as a reference resource. Most reference resources are not directly quoted in research …

Student Resources

I finally got some stuff up on the student resources page of this website. Although I still need to transfer and/or link material that I originally had up at my school website, I’m just glad to get real material on this page. I had forgotten that there was filler text! Eek! I am, however, definitely looking for suggestions to add to the list. The current list is more or less the materials I list on my syllabus; however, I would love to see, hear, or read …

You Tube for Teaching Ideas

My colleague Biray blogged about websites that gave aerobics instructors ideas for adding new moves into their classes. She discussed a website that people use to go to and that the hits on that website were decreasing. She then looked to YouTube and found some people who were sharing some great move. It got me thinking...are their teaching ideas on YouTube. I’m specifically thinking of tips or tricks to help lecturing, one of my weaknesses (I’m a constructivist learning girl!). Whereas …

Personal Portals

Personal portals allow individuals to construct an internet browser homepage (default page) with tools and links that are relevant and regularly used. Once you set up a personal portal account, you are able to customize your page/s with internet resources that are most useful to you. Most personal portal tools allow you to add specific windows, or flakes in Pageflakes, that are specialized tools. For example, you can have favorite links, to-do lists, note pad, important in materials from social bookmarking sites, social image (flickr) or video (YouTube) sites, etc. Once …

Web vs. Databases vs. Blogs

(Remember, I teach first year composition courses. In these courses, especially the ones with research agendas, I have to teach information literacy.) We are living in an age of information overload. You are probably already overloaded by all the of the information available on your general topic. To help you filter through that information, and to select some more reliable, and/or useful, sources, it helps to understand the distinction between the world wide web, library databases, and blogs. The Web—The “world wide web” is a mess of resources located …

Computer File Suffixes

(I’m sure some of you are saying, “come on, do you really need to explain this?” And the answer is “yes.” As I love to harp, not all of my students are Educause’s “net generation.” And even some of those who are still do not necessarily understand all of these distinctions.) Have you ever notices that computer files have three or four letter suffixes after their titles? Many audio files generally have mp3, wav, or wma. Digital image files usually have jpeg, gif, or tiff. Most documents have doc, …

What/Why Furl/Social Bookmark?

(if you are using another bookmarking tool like del.icio.us or Digg just change some verbage below) Furl is a social bookmarking website. If you’ve used “my favorites” in Internet Explorer, or bookmarks in Firefox, you will know the usefulness of bookmarks; however, bookmarks saved on your computer can not travel or be shared with anyone. For this course, you’ll primarily use bookmarking to help you keep track of the various resources you find while researching. You will want to “furl” or “bookmark” each online resource you find (including database …
