Campus Technology Winter 2007
Technology Leadership in Practice

Track Leader: John S. Camp, Ph.D., Former CIO, Wayne State University
Presenters

“The role of a CTO/CIO is not about technology itself; rather, it is about the ability of a campus to achieve its goals and objectives through technology.” –Brian Hawkins

The presenters copyrighted there materials; however, the materials are supposed to be linked to proceedings.

Information they shared during the first morning session included:

An IT leaders “ecosystem” includes strategic planning, governance, and project/portfolio management. Strategic plan sets the vision, but needs focus! Governance gives focus, but needs structured execution. Project/Portfolio management gives structured execution. And needs communication to hold it all together.

Examples of Governance Structure and Principles
Need an IT steering Committee as well as IT Architecture and Infrastructure committee, Non-Academic IT Systems, Academic IT Systems, as well as Ad Hoc committees as needed.

The panelist then discussed various case studies about funding issues, disaster & business continuity planning, and identity and access management.

I bookmarked various electronic resources they referred to @ my delicious page with the tag “cio.”
